Among other things, the horse's hoof wall consists of Keratin, a mix of complex proteins. Keratin provides strength to the hoof wall and has a low moisture content. Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, supports the production of Keratin, thereby improving the quality of the hooves (1,2). Additionally, the inclusion of Biotin also supports hoof growth (3). Research has shown that continuous supplementation of Biotin significantly affects hoof quality, particularly in horses with poor to very poor hoof quality (1).

Zinc and Copper are two trace elements important for the quality and structure of the hooves. Zinc is a key element for constructing and maintaining hoof wall cells and the keratinization process, or the hardening of the hooves (4). Copper is important for the production of enzymes which are necessary for the formation of keratin strands, which make up the hoof wall (5). Additionally, Copper combined with Zinc helps protect the fatty acids in the hooves from damage, which can lead to dryness.(6). A deficiency in these trace elements can result in brittle, dry hooves.

Amino acids from the diet are important for the production of Keratin. Hoof Health contains the essential amino acid methionine, which is used by the body to produce cysteine. Cysteine contributes to the strong structure of Keratin, which affects the quality and hardness of the hoof (6).

The amounts of Biotin, Zinc, and Copper in this supplement are based on studies that have shown that adding at least 30mg of Biotin, 20mg of Copper, and 100mg of Zinc for a 600kg horse has a significantly positive effect on the quality, hardness, and growth of the hooves (6,7).

Since a horse's hooves grow gradually, it is recommended to supplement this product for at least 9 months for optimal results.
