Sectolin Vetinal Sand Relief Psyllium consists of psyllium husk: soluble fibres that help clear sand your horse has ingested from the gut.
Why clear sand?
When eating forage, horses often ingest a little sand. That's not a problem as long as the gut can clear it again. If sand settles in the gut, it has a negative effect on digestion and your horse may develop gut problems or loose droppings.
Your horse is more at risk of ingesting too much sand:
- On a bare, closely grazed pasture, especially in a dry summer or in winter
- In a sand paddock, especially if forage is fed on the ground
- If it eats sand out of boredom
How does psyllium work?
Psyllium (Plantago ovata) consists of the seed and its husk. For sand removal, the husk is the best choice: a concentrated source of natural soluble fibre. In the digestive tract, the husk absorbs water and forms a gel-like mass that carries indigestible material such as sand, and waste products, out of the body. Psyllium fibres also have a positive effect on the gut flora and glucose metabolism.
How to use
Give Sand Relief dry over the feed or mixed into a mash. Feed it straight after mixing, as it quickly turns into a gel and starts working immediately. Use psyllium as a periodic course: long-term use can reduce nutrient digestibility and the effectiveness of the psyllium itself.
